The Weekend in Black and White

The city of Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the commune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
These two photos are from Herculaneum, it sem unreal that they have been able to dig these places up.

  1. I love Pompeii, although Herculaneum is my favorite of the two sites-been several times. Pompeii was buried under pyroclastic ash whilst Herculaneum was buried under mudslides which made it more preserved than Pompeii. They have yet to find what remains of Stabae ( Stabia) and other towns that were buried. Great images.

  2. Beautiful pictures of a magical place. I preferred Herculaneum as well – maybe because it is smaller and I could get the feeling of everyday life better than in Pompeii.
